Pierre Coupey is this year's Featured Artist at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver, which runs from August 4 to August 13.

Achilles Shield III is the third in a set of four tondo paintings that allude to the mythological shield Achilles carried into battle after the death of Patroclus, as presented by Homer in his epic poem The Iliad.

In Homer’s ekphrastic description, the shield was forged for Achilles by the god Hephaestus, and bore “spectacular decorative imagery” depicting cosmological and cultural order.

These versions, which bear traces of asemic writing that evoke both a cosmological dance and the heat of summer, are meant to function as reminders, in our current parlous time, of what can be lost when peace gives way to war.
